Why the green transition matters to business
European Union (EU) leaders have confirmed that “Green Transition” and “Digital Transformation” will be at the core of the EU’s COVID-19 economic recovery strategy.
Rather than postpone the European Green Deal (EGD), Green Recovery will actually accelerate the drive towards the adoption of sustainable products and services, building resilience into the economy to help protect against further shocks.
In the light of COVID-19, Europe wants to go further and establish global standards for sustainable business practices, as Europe has already done with the General Data Protection Directive (GDPR) in the area of data protection and privacy.
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has also endorsed this Green Recovery approach. On the occasion of Earth Day on 22 April, Secretary General Angel Gurría said: “governments have a unique chance for a green and inclusive recovery that they must seize – a recovery that not only provides income and jobs, but also has broader well-being goals at its core, integrates strong climate and biodiversity action, and builds resilience.”
